Siemens gigaset WLAN repeater 108 close to Fonera 2100

got my hands on 2 of these. I don't think they were supposed to be sold in the US, I can't find FCC id's on them and it had an EU power adapter (plus a USB cable power adapter).

They appear to be the same PCB as the fonera 2100. It has a non removable antenna on ANT2 and ANT1 has a pcb 'butterfly' antenna on it.

One thing I notice is that they get HOT, even hotter than the other fon 2100's I have!

Ram is 8mb ?(issi is42s16400b-7tl)
Flash is 2mb (st 25p16v6p)

The included firmware can act as AP, repeater, or what it calls "ethernet adapter".

I tried to get a serial boot up but no luck and the redboot prompt doesn't appear either.

I don't even know if its running linux. There is no gpl release on the gigaset website...

Can this be made to run gargoyle? I know the 2mb size is pretty small, but these would be great little repeaters or clients...

Thanks

Minimum flash size for Gargoyle and DD-WRT is 4MB flash

Reason being is the drivers are too large, the firmware is just
too big to fit on 2MB flash chips.

Hardware modding (replacing flash chips) is always a possibility,
but really, what's the point since all these newer routers are
coming down in price.

Best to donate them or use them as they are.

well, I do have a fonera 2201 that has a good flash chip but the power section of the board is fried. But the board will still just have 8 meg ram, is that enough to do repeating or client bridge mode?

Unfortunately its not that easy as far as just re-soldering on a new
flash chip, you also have to verify the board can use the larger chip.

Pinout could be a little different and additional wires might need to
be added to the board. Also, 8MB of ram is too small, you would
need to upgrade that to 16MB ram chip, which again, may have to
have additional settings or wires added to enable.

Might have more luck on DD-WRT or OpenWRT forums as far as
modding the devices and making sure it can use the chips.

well I'm sure it can use it its the same board as the 2100 fonera

Seems like too big of a hassle.

Good thing I only paid $10 each for them.. maybe they will work ok with the stock firmware?

you can allways try ddwrt mini

the "pcb" can be found in the following products :
* ACCTON MR3201A
* FON FON2100A,B,C and F
* Edge-Core WA3101
* Philips SNR6500
* SMC WEBT-G
* Siemens Gigaset Wlan repeater 108

mostly memory (ram & flash), antenna attachments and look/feel (firmware) can differ...

to know that the FON2100 once was sold for 5 euro new...
and had more memory? :-)

Yesterday I found a fonera 2.0g for 275 euro "new"

good point...I overlooked the "broadcom-only" fact when I read "about dd-wrt" with it's micro/mini/mega versions :-)

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Su ... MB_flash_2

Atheros and Ralink

Note on devices with 2MB flash
Not supported by dd-wrt, Atheros and Ralink builds needs at least 4MB of flash.

Note on devices with 4MB flash
Atheros and Ralink builds are not prefixed with mini, small, std, or mega. 4MB is usually enough for basic dd-wrt functions but there are a few routers where certain functions had to be removed due to space limitations.

Note on devices with 8 or more MB flash
This is the flash size needed for those users who intend to load additional software packages on their router or want to run a build compiled with additional functionality.
