wr1043nd v2 LAN1 port show 10mbit connection on 100mbit card

Hello,
I am running Gargoyle 1.9.0 on a wr1043nd v2 router. I have an old laptop running ubuntu server 15.10 that I use as NAS and DLNA server. The integrated lan card got busted, so I bought a cheap usb 2.0 10/100 fast ethernet adapter. I got it up and running, but it only gives like 6-7 Mbit/s speed, and the router overview page shows LAN1 port to be connected at 10Mbit/s speed.
In the meantime on the laptop dmesg shows that link is established at 100Mbit/s, and ethtool confirms 100mbit full duplex, but I can't even get to 10 mbits, checking with iperf3.
