Please help.
I need to block the chat option in gmail.
Aim and google talk i need to have blocked.
I know it can be done from within the gmail web browser,
but i need to know how to block from the router using gargoyle.
My version is 1.33
I will be upgrading to 1.34 tonight.

Actually, this is not possible (unless you can break https encryption).

Google chat availabe on the gmail website is using https, which means the connection is encrypted. There is no way to separate the gchat packets from those that gmail needs to display regular mail.

Is it possible to block "https" using gargoyle?
I do not need a secure connection for anything I do at home, and my daughter certainly does not.

Would blocking "https" solve the problem?

If so, please walk me through it.

You are probably using https much more than you think.

If you use gmail or and other web mail, do any online banking, purchase any item on the internet using a credit card or any of a large number of other things you most likely need https.

You can block port 443 which will disable https and see for yourself.

Alternatively you could assign a static IP address to your daughters computer and block this port only for her.

Luckily, I do not use that computer myself.
We all have our own.
Every time I give a little access, she uses it in a way that was not intended.
That is why I love Gargoyle router management, I am able to block most of the forbidden content easily.

If you ping talk.google.com (I think thats the chat client IP)

You could try and setup this rule under Firewall -> Restrictions:

I don't use google talk myself - so you'll kind of just have to test it.

It does also block out talk.google.com when you try
to browse to that address via http.

The problem I have is when I ping talk.google.com it times out.

It shows pinging talk.l.google.com [74.125.93.125]
but loses 100% of the packets.

I even tried to ping 74.125.155.125 with the same results.

I'm gonna buy a newspaper on the way home.

Ok, so I seem to have found the answer on google's help page.
Problem is I dont know how to set this up in gargoyle.

We understand that it's sometimes necessary to disable instant messaging services on a network. If you need to prevent Gmail users on your network from chatting, we suggest blocking DNS lookups to chatenabled.mail.google.com, by returning 127.0.0.1.

Now it is the way it used to be. That lovely yellow box that says..
"Your internet connection is experiencing problems or your network administrator has blocked Gmail chat. Learn more"

Well ! I have performed ping test for talk.google.com . the results are :
