Hi

A new user here and confused as hell.
With 2 teenagers in the house and capped internet, we've started to reach the cap before the end of the month. So, out I go and buy a tp link wr1043nd to install gargoyle which was quite easy but I just can't work out how to set up the existing 7800vdpx with the wr1043nd. I would like to set up the billion as modem only and the tp link as the router distributing the ip addresse, then tthere is a 16 port switch which has an airport extreme broadcasting the wireless network.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using it for a PPPoE connection (ADSL)?

For making these changes i always use a laptop and directly connect myself to the modem with an ethernet cable.

So we will be putting the modem into bridge mode which means we have to manually make a lot of settings. Before we start, make note of your VPI/VCI settings. Mine is "8/35". Also note your encapsulation mode whether it is VC/MUX or LLC/Snap Bridging. If you can't find that setting you can try either one.

First we want to make sure that the Gargoyle and the Modem end up on different subnets. I'll assume gargoyle is on the default 192.168.1.X subnet, so we will configure the Modem into the 10.0.0.X subnet.
On the modem:
Configuration -> Lan -> Ethernet
Set IP Address to 10.0.0.138 (i use this address because it is what my old telstra modem used to use, you can use anything in the 10.0.0.X range).
Subnet mask should auto set itself to 255.0.0.0 (if it doesn't change it to this).
No IGMP snooping, no LAN side firewall.
DHCP server is enabled and starting IP address is 10.0.0.1 and end is 10.0.0.254. Leased time is default 24 hours.
No idea what option 66 is but it is disabled.
Use router's setting as DNS server is ticked.
Apply settings. It may want to reboot to apply those settings.

You will need to unplug and replug in your ethernet cable to the modem to refresh your IP address or you won't be on the same subnet.

Take this opportunity to go into the Gargoyle router and go to Connection -> Basic.
Connect Via: PPPoE Wired.
Username: your username provided by your ISP (usually your full email address)
Password: password for your account
Everything else left the same.

Hit save and wait for the changes to apply.

Now head back to the Modem (remember to refresh your IP address if it doesn't let you in).
Configuration -> WAN -> WAN Service
You should have one interface already setup for your current internet. Edit this interface.
Set "Type" to Bridging.
Enter the VPI/VCI you noted earlier, and set the encapsulation method.
Everything else can stay as default. Hit apply.
Again the modem might want to reboot itself to make that change not sure.

When it's done. Plug an ethernet cable from LAN 1 of the modem to the WAN port of your Gargoyle. The connection should come up pretty quickly.

Remember that if it all goes badly, just reset your modem's wan setting to PPPoE, enter your details and you should be back on the internet. Nothing you're changing can't be undone

When you say connect to the wan of the gargoyle, do you mean the internet port or just 1 of the 4 Ethernet ports?

Ok, so I've hooked the Billion into the internet port on the Gargoyle and connected the laptop into the gargoyle and it seems to be working ok.

Internet port correct.

Awesome, so right now I'm connected to the wifi on the gargoyle and everything is good. I should be able to plug the 16 port switch into the gargoyle has the airport extreme connected and then connect through the airport is that correct?

correct. a very similar setup to mine.
I have a 24 port switch with an airport extreme on the upper floor of the house to provide additional coverage.
