WNDR3800 upgrade from 1.5.6?

Hi guys,
I have a Netgear WNDR3800 running 1.5.6. I want to upgrade it but I see this router is no longer listed in compatible tested routers.

Can anyone tell me what what the latest version of firmware they have used successfully with this router.

Also, I see the general warning that settings should not be preserved when upgrading from 1.5.6 - does that mean that after I upgrade it I will have to set everything up again from scratch?

I use a WNDR3800 on 1.7.2.
1.8.0 is basically the same as 1.7.2.
It all works great.

You have to set everything up from scratch.

Many thanks Lantis.

I see you are in Australia. Do you by any chance use Telstra Cable?
(the only reason am looking to upgrade Gargoyle is to try to get it work with Telstra's Gateway Max router in bridge mode)

Telstra ADSL.
I used it successfully with their TG587n V3 (the previous generation of their basic $40 modem/router).

I put it into bridge mode, entered my PPPoE info into gargoyle and off it went no problems :)

I'm using Telstra ADSL at the moment (via Internode) and my WNDR3800 works fine with that, but for some reason won't wok reliably with cable for some reason.

When in one of my own sites' CMS when I try to go into a different section the page starts to load then the server resets the connection (according to Firefox). A refresh usually then loads the page.

If I put the Telstra cable modem in normal NAT mode and connect directly to that, everything works fine.

This is clutching at straws, but one thing I have noticed when going through the WNDR3800, is that even though I set it to use the ISPs DNS servers, if I look at ipconfig on my PC the DNS server is listed as the router's IP rather than Telstra's DNS servers.

I figured I should get the latest Gargoyle firmware as a starting point.

Sure won't hurt to try and update and see what's what.

As far as the DNS address being the router, that's ok.
The clients send DNS requests to the router, which then uses the ISPs servers. It then returns the requests to the client.

You can manually set DNS servers on each client if you like to test the behaviour. In Windows this would be: Network Interface > Properties > IPv4 > manually choose DNS servers.

Make sure you don't have "Force clients to use router DNS" checked if you perform that test.

For the life of me I cannot find information about the different versions;

gargoyle_1.8.0-ar71xx-generic-wndr3800ch-squashfs-factory.img
gargoyle_1.8.0-ar71xx-generic-wndr3800ch-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
gargoyle_1.8.0-ar71xx-generic-wndr3800-squashfs-factory.img
gargoyle_1.8.0-ar71xx-generic-wndr3800-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

Which one do I use? (given I currently have 1.5.6 installed)

EDIT: Ah, don't worry, I think I just found it ...

Not CH.
And sysupgrade if you're upgrading an existing version of openwrt or gargoyle :)

Thanks again. Upgraded and all is working, WITH the cable modem (in bridge mode), even with my convoluted LAN with Unifi access points :D

Just need to configure all the static IPs and possible a few port forwards for Xbox etc
