Linksys wrt54g-TM and wrt54g

I installed 1.8.0 ( not noticing how new it was ) on a wrt54g-tm, got it configured, added it to my network, but any kind of higher volume traffic caused it to lockup within minutes.
I backed off to 1.6.2, reconfigured - better, but still failing with higher volumes of traffic ( e.g. you-tube )
Tried a wrt54g v2.2 failed while I was configuring it.

Is there a trick to getting these older broadcom based routers working with Gargoyle?

Update
I installed 1.4.7 on th -TM, and it worked under full load, for about 40m. And then locked up.
Is there any hardware that is known to provide rock-solid stability with gargoyle? Preferably 1.8.0.

I have used the WRT54G-TM for many years with Gargoyle without issues.

Exactly how did you make it crash and is it possible you have a hardware problem?

Under 1.8.0 it would crash ( stop responding, kicked off ssh, no ping, blinking power-light ) under almost any load ( I could not even download the 1.6.2 firmware without it crashing! )
1.6.2 was a little better ( I ran firstboot after installing, just to be sure ) but almost as soon as I added it to the network, and the kids started you-tubeing, it hung.
1.4.7 started well, I had both a netflix and an amazon prime video stream running, approx 30mbits for 20m or so. But after about 40m it hung ( this time the power light was solid, but the router was not responsive ) and I gave up.
Other things that may be relevant - wireless is off. No qos or quotas. I did add 10 or so static IP's.

the Linksys wrt54g-TM and wrt54g have crap CPUS imo. I think you mite be wasting your time. Look on ebay for a router with a better CPU. If you cant do that then you will have to turn off all of the things that make Gargoyle grate! or use openwrt.

Thanks tapper - I kinder thought I was going to need better hardware. I just ordered a TP-Link WR1043ND.

REALLY appreciate the heads up re 1.8!
I ordered it from Amazon ( it was out of stock, so it should be fresh. ) Listed just as V2 - how can I tell the point version? And do you know the differences?

It occurred to me - the WR1043ND has not shipped yet - is there another ( similarly priced ) router you would recommend instead? I don't need gigabit or wireless.

I upgraded from the TL-1043ND to the TL-WDR3600 mainly because I needed and additional USB port, but the additional mem is also helpful..
