Trying to upgrade a tplink 1043nd v2 that had previous (June, 19) build with gargoyle_1.7.x-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr1043nd-v2-squashfs-sysupgrade I receive the error that i can't update it because
"Firmware contains a boot loader ..."

Sorry in advance for the dumb question, but are these ispy builds just releases based off the trunk (svn?) branch or is there something more to them?

They are based on the latest gargoyle code. Gargoyle is still based on Barrier Breaker (for now).
Between each major release there's between 10-100 code changes.
Between each iSpy release there about 1-5.
