Bug in basic.sh?

Dear all,
I am compiling the current version (1.7.1) of the gargoyle router for a PC engines APU machine. With some agony, I have compiled a custom image. I can access the router and can go through the setup, but if changes on the connection page are saved, ethernet connectivity is lost.
After some investigation, I found that /etc/config/network is modified by a script which does not include the ifname=eth2 (or ifname=eth1) parameter in the lan section. I am connecting wan to pppoe, ifname=eth0 is correctly changed in the wan section (this ethernet port was used during initial setup for lan). Thus, there is no connectivity to the web interface anymore.
I would be grateful for any help, in particular if someone could point me to the script that changes the /etc/config/network file.
I am thinking this may be a bug, since I cannot think how a missing library or similar could cause this behavior. But I could be wrong on this.
Thank you for looking at this post.
Best wishes
