dsl connection to dir-835

I have a DSL connection which works directly with a Linux computer. Insert dir-835 router with 1.6.2 installed and no internet. LAN wired routes seem to work (printer, Linux computer, and LAN power switch.)

I am wondering if this is the problem:
WAN Gateway IP: 0.0.0.0

If it is the problem, I don't see how to change it. If it is not the problem, I don't see what the problem is.

Is your DSL modem connected to the "Internet" WAN port on your DIR-853?

Yes. And, it is a DIR-835, not DIR-853.

What are your Gargoyle settings under Connection - Basic - Internet/WAN?

If I am understanding your setup correctly, you probably need:
Gargoyle - Connection - Basic - Internet / WAN - Connect via: DHCP (wired)
