[Solved] WRT160NL bricked

The router is version 1. I did a factory reset and rebooted the router. I used the router's upgrade utility to send "gargoyle_1.6.2-ar71xx-generic-wrt160nl-squashfs-factory.bin". The utility reported that the upgrade had failed. I rebooted the router and it was bricked. The power light flashes. However, Windows sees it under "Networks". It reports it as "WRT160NL", v1.00.01, and sees the mac address. It does not see an IP address (reported as unavailable) nor a web interface. I tried pinging it on startup on 192.168.1.1 using a static ip (192.168.1.9). While router booted I received several "General Failure" messages, then a several "Reply from 192.168.1.9: Destination host unreachable" and then only "Request timed out". I tried to send a factory file via TFTPutil "FW_WRT160NL_1.0.04.002_US_20130619_code.bin" to 192.168.1.1. This was the only factory file that I could find. This failed as the ip doesn't exist. I read something about pressing buttons when the DMZ light turns on for failsafe but I do not know what a DMZ light is. I did try pressing the WIFI security button several times while it booted but had no luck with that. With static ip and connected to my WIFI (which is at 192.168.1.1) and connected to bricked router (wired) at the same time I am unable to connect to Internet. What did I do wrong and can I unbrick the router?
I now believe that Windows doesn't see the router. It is info left over from when the router worked.
