Moving from WRT54G-TM with DD-WRT

I recently purchased 3 WTR54G-TM routers with DD-WRT pre-installed on it. Because DD-WRT is already on it, I don't think I need to follow the instructions for for that model's stock firmware.

Before I go ahead and upgrade them, I just want to confirm that for the WRT54G-TM, the correct image for me to be using is gargoyle_1.2.1-wrt54g-squashfs.bin is that correct?

It'd be a shame to brick these, they are excellent units, and quite rare.

And just to confirm, I just treat the new image as a firmware uopgrade and use the firmware upgrade option from within the DD-WRT menu?

Yes, with Broadcom devices, you can flash from DD-WRT
to Gargoyle just from the Web GUI.

Atheros devices you cannot, more work is required.

Old thread, I know, but I wanted to post my results.

I was running the NEWD-2 - K26 build 14438 of DD-WRT big on
my WRT-54G-TM router.

I wanted to test flash to Gargoyle - VERY simple

Here are the steps.

1) download the current broadcom wrt54g BIN file (not the TRX)
2) login to dd-wrt
3) goto administration tab, commands sub-tab
4) type in "mtd erase nvram" without the quotes
5) click 'Run Command'
6) do the firmware upgrade sub-tab
7) choose reset-to-defaults pull-down option
8) browse and choose the broadcom wrt54g bin Gargoyle file
9) click upgrade
10) wait about 3-5 minutes - WAIT! Have Patience.

the mtd erase nvram command makes sure to blank any old settings

it took a while for the Gargoyle firmware to flash and come up,
but it did come up to the gargoyle GUI.

I was on the 192.168.1.1 subnet already

If you have another range set - I would do a full Reset to Defaults
and reboot the router and set a basic user/password before
doing this upgrade - just to make it much simpler.

Gents,
I also just purchased a WRTP54G-TM.
I want to make it a wireless bridge.
On the download page there is the gargoyle_1.2.3-wrt54g-squashfs.bin, but also a gargoyle_1.2.3-wrt54g3g-squashfs.bin.
Which one is appropriate? I'm inclined to think that the "3g" refers to the 3G T-Mobile phones it also served.
I'd like to try it tomorrow but will not until the experts provide me some guidance!
Thank alot for all your help!

If this is a fresh router with Linksys firmware - follow this guide!

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WRT54G-TM

Once you get DD-WRT loaded, just use the GUI to flash
the firmware below:

gargoyle_1.2.3-wrt54g-squashfs.bin

In DD-WRT - you goto Administration Tab -> Firmware Upgrade

Follow my instructions listed above - works great!

WELL I JUST WASTED $22!
I kept trying to get it to flash but kept getting an error that said "wrong file image".
and after I had read for hours the first time, I missed the part in DD-WRT that said this router will never be supported.
When I opened the box it turns out to be a WRT U 54G-TM!!
It still works but its useless to me stock form.
ARRRGGGGH!!

Its BCM5352, So gargoyle will work on it, they are currently working on a openwrt port for it. i think you will just loose all of your extra functions.

I dont mind losing extra functions at all. I want it soley as a wireless bridge for a networ printer and computer in another room.
But is does not even let me go into it to flash it.
I do appreciate the help though. Is there a file I can download to get it to work?
