I am running 1.5.11 on
TP-Link TL-WDR4300 v1
with a special config to use WAN Port as LAN

is it possible to update to 1.6.1 without any risk of loosing my config or briking the router?

Very unlikely that you will brick your router unless by some
extremely unlucky chance that your power went out during flashing.

It is always a possibility that the upgrade could glitch and the
config gets corrupted so you have to reset the router and
reflash / reconfigure fresh.

No guarantees on flashing 3rd party firmwares
