How to not total brick

I have tplink tlwr841n v8.4. I want to experiment with openwrt gargoyt ddwrt but I am afraid of damage the bootloader and art partition. I have serial console working but if the bootloader messed no way to recover. My question are: what I must to know to be sure that the new firmware will not corrupt the bootloader and art ?

Gargoyle will not touch your UBoot or your ART partitions

So no problem to install firmware without bootloader from serial console ?
What about new official firmware which contain bootloader and I cut the boot part and flash it, will it work and will I have working bootloader ?
The art partition can be deleted by mistake from serial and mtd command ? No from firmware menu
