[Q]: Flashing a 'new' router

Hi,
I received a TP-LINK 1043 router that has been used before. It's currently flashed with dd-wrt. I would like to flash it with Gargoyle, and wondering what the best way to go about this is. By reading the docs, I should flash it back to factory, then use the *firmware* image to install.
The *sysupgd* image seems to be for an existing installation or open-wrt. Can I safely use that on dd-wrt? I just don't want to brick the router.
One other thing. There is an image provided for restoring back to factory firmware. It says that it's been modified slightly. How is it different from say a firmware update that I download from TP-Link?
thanks
