Connecting a router to another

Connecting a router to another router? what would happen if I connected a router to my router that is connected to the isp. If i had it 100ft. away from the 1st router, would it extend my range of wifi with the additional router? I had this idea because my router is on the first floor, but barely has any connection on the 2nd floor, so would this system work, to extend the wifi to the 2nd floor?

FWIW, this post being a month old and all,
yes.
I have our DSL modem/router combo downstairs, it has 4 ports 2 for the PCs one for the network printer and one which goes upstairs via cat5, through a switch which is where all the home theater gear is, then via a power link to the 2nd router (DHCP both ends).

With more modern routers (which mine are not) you can set them up to have one large wifi which you can seamlessly roam.

I'm in the process of setting the upstairs one up with quotas, so I don't get shaped again.
