Router in bridge mode frequently goes down

I have an old ASUS wl-500 deluxe running Gargoyle 1.4.7 in Wireless Bridge/Repeater mode. I changed my cable modem and it now comes as an access point/NAT router so I'm using the cable modem as the gateway router. Previously, my ASUS wl-500 was in Gateway mode and I had completely no issues with it for over a year!
Now having since switched to bridge/repeater mode, I'm having frequent network outages. Network connectivity will suddenly drop (but the LAN connection is still present. i.e., Windows networking just shows no internet but LAN is still available) and I can only access the web interface after a while. The router seems to have rebooted on its own because the uptime will be about 2 mins. At this point I cannot access the internet, but I can access the gateway and another access point using the internal IPs. But no internet connection.
The problem goes away after I manually log in to Gargoyle web interface and reboot the router from there. Let me know what logs or screenshots I need to generate or supply to solve this. Thanks.
PS: I don't need WiFi repeater mode. How to disable Wireless in bridge/repeater mode?
