PPPoE bridged mode problem

Setup is: Windows 7 PC wired to Netgrear N600 with Gargoyle ver 1.5.11. Netgear setup with PPPoE (with appropriate credentials). Netgear wired to Speedstream 4200 modem in bridged mode. Speedstream connected to ADSL phone line.
Previous setup was a Billion 7800N as the only device and was working fine.
The problem is that I don't get any internet communication after rebooting the devices. After a reboot, I can ping the assigned Wan IP address but not the Wan Gateway IP nor communicate to anything on the internet - I get a destination host unreachable reply from the Netgear.
I have tried the Billion 7800N (setup as full bridge mode) in place of the Speedstream modem and get the same failure. I have connected the Windows PC directly to the Billion (acting as just the modem) and setup a new Broadband PPPoE connection to it and do get a internet communication Ok.
To get me up and going for now, I have setup the Billion normally in non-bridged mode and the Netgear Wan port for DHCP wired mode (basically running with 2 routers). I do get internet access with this but get other issues I think because of double routing and double NAT I suppose.
I hope someone can advise (please give very basic suggestions because I am rather a newbie in this).
