WR1043-nd(gagoyle) and Airport Express

I trying to setup a wr1043nd running 1.5.10 and a Airport Express running 7.6.3. I want to use airport express to extend my wireless from my wr1043nd. I tried the way I did it with my airport extreme, no luck. Tried using WDS, still no go. Are they even compatible? What are the compatible device to extend a gargoyle?

I have a first generation Time Capsule and a TP-Link WDR-4300 and cannot get WDS to work properly either. I think the Apple wifi devices only work properly with other Apple wifi devices.
I understand the only way to 100% guarantee WDS will work is to use the same hardware as you already have, another WR1043ND.
