No connection from WAN on local ports

Hi there!
I'm running my two TP-LINK WR1043NDs on Gargoyle 1.5.4. That version gave me best results and stability when working as access point and wireless bridge.
The problem comes with the one running as gateway / access point.
Some information beforehand:
- It is connected to the internet (DSL) via PPPOE. I do a WAN reconnect (ifwan down/up) every 24 hours via cron job at 4am.
- I have enabled the dyndns and it is working perfect (forwarding ftp to different host).
- On the router I have a application running, listening on a specific port (above 1024). I don't have set up a local port forwarding for the specific port. Local clients are able to connect to this port all the time, disconnect and connect again without any problem.
Now my problem:
Clients from the internet (via the dyndns) can't connect. But when I open the page Firewall -> Port Forwarding and click the button "Save changes" the wan clients can connect! When they close the connection they cannot connect again until I do that again. That seems very strange for me...
So what do I have to do to let clients from the internet/WAN connect to a application running on the gateway router?
Andy why would it work when simply saving the port forwardings and apllying the settings again (w/o having a ports defined there for the application)?
Any ideas?
