Strange directory appears on NTFS USB drive

I have a 2TB MyBook external NTFS drive connected via USB to Netgear wndr3700v2 running Gargoyle v1.3.16. The other day, while accessing the drive from a PC running Win 7, I noticed a new directory C6B04293B0428A3F. Opening this new directory lists sub-directories, including itself; the process can be repeated infinitely... When I connect the drive directly to the PC running Win 7, this new directory is not there but in its place is a short file including four characters followed by string "/tmp/usb_mount/C6B04293B0428A3F". I presume this was left over by he linux operating system inside the router, perhaps after I shut down the router.
Is it safe to delete this file, and will this resolve the "looping" directory issue? Is there a way to "eject" the USB drive from the router before shut down to prevent this from happening again?
Thank you!
