So apparently this WZR-300HP has the same chipset as the WZR-HP-G300NH2, according to openwrt site (
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/buffalo/wzr-hp-g300nh2)
I'm looking to purchase soon and wanted to know if I would be able to flash gargoyle on this router?

This person reported success with OpenWRT
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=40838
If OpenWRT will work so will Gargoyle but we have no experience here with that router. If you try please report your results here and over at OpenWRT.
If get into trouble then your best resource will be over at openwrt.org.

In the supported routers, the guide only mentions the WZR-HP-G300NH, however in the download section, there are files for WZR-HP-G300NH2, which I assume is for version 2?

Hate to wake up the dead, but can anyone tell me what firmware *specifically* they flashed to this router? I tried 1.5.9
(tftp.bin) version for g300nh2 and it bricks every time.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Doubtful it bricks.
I'm guessing the red diagnostic light is flashing and if you hooked up
a serial cable to it - you'd see a bad crc/checksum error message.
I had to recently recover a bad flash on my WZR-HP-G300NH V1 and
I had to hex edit the tftp files and remove some header bytes.

Looks like DD-WRT supports the router.
I'd recommend this:
Download latest DD-WRT for the router and flash that
Then - from the DD-WRT interface, flash the SysUpgrade firmware.
HOWEVER - Eric should be releasing a new version of Gargoyle
soon since the final Attitude Adjustment was recently released.
Wait a bit until the new Gargoyle gets released, then try this.
