I'm having problems with my Rosewill RNX-GX4 router. It worked great for the first year out of the box. I have never reflashed the firmware.
For the last month, it has been dropping/ignoring wireless connections. Many web pages are initially reported as not being found and when refreshed, work. Some pages seem to be a combination of graphics and text/hyperlinks. For example, CNN.com would initially present correctly, and when I return to the home page, I get a CNN logo in the upper left corner followed by a column of all the key hyperlinks. When I refresh, I may or may not get the original HTML page. iPads and laptops using wireless connections are having trouble connecting. Desktops are showing the same troubles. I'm wondering if I should take the router out back and shoot it or relfash the firmware. If I reflash, what is the preferred package? (e.g., Gargoyle, native Rosewill, ...)
I did check with the cable company and they said my signal levels and connectivity to their equpment is fine. I'm thinking the router is to blame.

Since you mentioned your router once worked well the indication is that you have developed a hardware problem. I sense that you are not so familiar with open source router software so I cannot recommend your first venture into our world be with suspect hardware. So if you can take it back do so or contact your manufacturers tech support if they have any. That's my two cents.

Now if you are ready to trash the router and have nothing to lose than you can try Gargoyle on it. At one time your router was supported although recently there have been some complaints that the firmware install did not go well for reasons which are not clear. Our trouble is that these manufacturers change their routers without notice of any kind so we worry. We don't know what version yours is or when of if there is a problem. But as I said, if you have nothing to lose give it a go.

You need to hard reset your router to factory defaults to clear out the flash memory of whatever crap is stuck in there that is causing your problems. This is how you do it with the RNX-GX4:

1. Unplug the power of RNX-GX4
2. Using a sharp item to press on the “Default” button at the back of the
RNX-GX4.
3. Plug the power back to the “PWR” hole, while still pressing the “Default”
button.
4. Release the “Default” button when you see the “SYS” LED (red LED)
start flashing.
5. After releasing the Default button, please wait for 1 min for the reset to
take effect.

I am pretty sure your performance will return to normal after you do this. You will probably want to log into the web interface at http://192.168.1.1 after you do the hard reset to set the settings back to the way you had them. The default login will be "admin" and the default password will be "guest" as well.

If you want to switch to Gargoyle, I believe you can upload this firmware though the Rosewill web interface:

But again, I would still do the hard reset first before you try to flash the firmware, since your router is displaying memory problems.
