1.4.7 1.5.3 WNDR3700v2 uses bridge modem as DNS

Netgear WNDR3700v2 router is connected to TP-Link TD-8817 dsl modem set to bridge mode.
For some reason the router is picking up the modem IP address as a DNS server. This is happening with both gargoyle 1.4.7 and 1.5.3.
There was no issue with gargoyle 1.4.2, which ran continuously for months without intervention.
Initial DNS setting was automatic from ISP, then tried custom, force clients to use router, etc.
The work around is to go to the router connection page and click save - this deletes the modem IP from the list of DNS servers and restores functionality for a period of time (generally a day or two).
Is there a more permanent solution?
