Config backup restore accross versions?

Hi,
just started to test out and use this excellent looking firmware but I haven't found a definitive answer to this. Most other (DD-WRT, Tomato) i used doesn't usually advise to restore config from earlier version when updating to new ones, Gargoyle is different?
Realise that it doesn't use NVRAM for settings so is this why it is OK to restore saved backup to new versions?
