TL-WR1043ND and T-Mobile Web Rocket 2.0

Hi,
I'm a noob with regards to routers (just bought a TL WR1043ND) and first installed OpenWRT, which works great with my 3G modem (T-Mobile Web Rocket 2.0/ZTE MF691). But, I need bandwidth quotas as our data caps are small and data is expensive in South Africa.
So I flashed Gargoyle (1.5.4) and installed the same packages I required to get the modem working on OpenWRT, but it does not give me a 3G WAN option in the web interface. I had a look at dmesg and it seems that usb_modeswitch is working, but after that it is registered as a CD ROM.
I uninstalled usb_storage and then got the modem to dial but it disconnects immediately. I think the problem is as described in
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=154796, where ppp is sending the remote the LAN address and then the remote asks for a disconnection.
I do not yet have enough experience to figure out where OpentWRT and Gargoyle differ with this. I tried installing Gargoyle's packages above OpenWRT but it still had the same issue and then I could not get into Gargoyle's interface (only LuCI).
Does anybody know why ppp between OpentWRT and Gargoyle differ? Also why Gargoyle does not offer a 3G WAN option in web interface? (T-Mobile Web Rocket 2.0 registers /dev/ttyACM0 and /dev/ttyACM1).
regards
