Connection drop

I have three routers (tl-wr841nd) linked together via eth interfaces, one of them is flashed with gargoyle and acts as gateway, other two with original firmware used as switches. All clients connected wirelessly.
Sometimes strange situation happens: main router looses connection to the other two. I am connected to the main router wirelessly. When clients of the other two routers loose connection to the main router I cannot ping other two routers from my notebook, but sometimes I can ping them from the main router (via ssh) and sometimes cannot. In other situation I can ping from my notebook and from main router but cannot ping main router from other two routers and from clients connected to them.

I have found only one way to fix that - restart network (/etc/init.d/network restart).

What investigation I need to do to find out what is happening? Thanks.

Simplest test of all:

Have all 3 routers connect via Wireless-G speeds

Do not connect via Wireless-N

If there are no connection drops, then there are still issues
with the Wireless-N mode drivers.

I have done some testing myself and found out, on my DIR-601,
if I only do Wireless-G connectivity, the connection is VERY Stable.

Once I do the Wireless-N mode, then I start to get instability.

This really seems like a driver issue that could be fixed/resolved
in later versions of OpenWRT

I'm currently testing the Trunk build of OpenWRT on my DIR-601
and Wireless-N mode seems much more stable.

Can this haapen because of reaching limit of max connections?

Highly unlikely...

If you hit 4096 connects (default settings) your router would
have been overloaded and your internet slowed to a crawl.

That many connections would cripple any home router.

This is not me thinking this will happen, I've proven this and
done testing with pbix

There are currently some wireless issues going on and this is more
on the OpenWRT side of things, so just need patience.

I'm running a Trunk build of OpenWRT based on a newer kernel
and it seems MUCH more stable than Backfire 10.03.1 for wireless.

DoesItMatter: I have a d-link 601 also and Gargoyle 1.4.6 and am experiencing connection drops whenever I upload at higher speeds. I have a 5 Mb upload speed. The connection will drop out for around one minute. After that it connects again. It's very annoying as I'm uploading a several hundred megabyte file to a server and it disconnects and I have to start all over again.

I'm willing to try that trunk build you installed. Can you tell me which exact version you used?

Edit: Nevermind I can see it in your list of routers. But where do I find this particular trunk?

I think you are right about the unstable wireless N mode. I switched to G mode and haven't experienced a drop out yet after uploading numerous large files at 500 Kb/s. This is disappointing. I thought these open source firmwares were supposed to be more stable than the stock router firmware. Do you know if the stock 601 firmware has this problem?

Edit: I reinstalled the stock 601 firmware back onto the router and uploaded some files.There were no connection drops at all while uploading or downloading, but the stock firmware will drop the connection randomly at times so it's not anymore reliable than the "stable" gargoyle firmware.

There are so many reason behind connection dropping. First check your all connection setting. If every connections are ok then we can solve this problem using wireless router and modem. Those are help to boost your signal strength.
