Hi,
The 'supported routers' page says that the Buffalo WBR2-G54 router is supported but I can't find anywhere, any mention of how to install Gargoyle, nor can I find mention of the router in the forum. Has anyone had any success with this router? I'm a complete novice, so if there was a step by step instruction document somewhere, that would be brilliant!

I have a WBR2-G54, a family of six and a limit of 30Gb per month which we're frequetly exceeding and then having to pay extra for. Most of this is from teenagers streaming BBC programmes from iPlayer. I'd really like to grant a data allowance to each of them and allow them to discover an awareness of how much data they each use so they can take responsibility for themselves.

I'd happily buy a router with Gargoyle preinstalled, but there don't seem to be any in the online shop.

Sure you can flash this router. Your best bet is to use tftp to do it. You should be able to tftp this firmware to the router:

The basic idea is you will need to give your computer a static ip address temporarily, and then restart your router. Briefly upon startup, your router runs a tftp server that is waiting to receive a firmware upload. You just need to send it the firmware file using a tftp client in this time period to flash the new firmware.

Hi, Well I've had some success in that Gargoyle is now on the router and I can access all the settings, thanks for the advice. I have it wired to a Dlink 300T modem via a switch. My iMac is wired to the switch too and able to access the internet. I've created a list of MAC addresses (kid's wireless devices) to allow, and have assigned each MAC address a fixed ip addresse all of which fall outside of a small reserved DHCP pool. I also created rules and quotas all of which were working fine initially (for about an hour last night).

One by one though, the kids arrived in my office asking why they couldn't connect to the internet. Variously, their devices could either 'see' the Buffalo router but not connect, or just plainly not 'see' the router at all. The 'diag' light on the router is permanently on, which I don't think it should be? I have of course tried a reset of both the router and the modem, in various sequences and using different methods. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestion of what might be the cause here?

Not sure I exactly follow you. Is the router working at all? If you plug a computer directly into a lan port via ethernet cable, can you access it at all? Does it hand out ip addresses via dhcp, can you ping it, ssh into it or access it via the web interface? If you install metageek inssider on a computer with a wifi card, does the ssid show up?

If you can't get it to do anything, try to do the tftp flash again, which will at least hopefully get everything set back to defaults. The 30/30/30 reset commonly mentioned with dd-wrt and other third part firmware has absolutely no effect of routers running OpenWRT and Gargoyle as far as I know, so the tftp flash might be your only option. Another thing you may want to check out is the power supply of the router. Sometimes these go bad. I have seen them seemingly turn a router on, yet cause the router not to function/boot. If you have a power supply from another device that is the same voltage (or only very slightly different [preferably higher]) and the same or greater amperage you could try to swap it as a last resort.

Are you sure his router has a configurable hardware button? I guess the reset button is considered "configurable?"
