name already exists in /etc/hosts but does not

/etc/hostsnot giving name magicjack to the dhcp lease of 192.168.1.202 because the name exists in /etc/hosts with address 192.168.1.200
not giving name magicjack.lan to the dhcp lease of 192.168.1.202 because the name exists in /etc/hosts with address 192.168.1.200
what the heck? It used to exist, but I removed it from /etc/hosts and have rebooted long since. Its not even listed in /etc/ethers.127.0.0.1 localhost.
