WZR-HP-G300NH Can't Upgrade

I've got a G300NH that has a RTL8366RB chipset and have been trying to upgrade since 1.5.1 and 1.5.2.

I have been following this guide on tftp and telnet/ssh upgrades:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/buffalo/wzr ... ftp.method

and no luck. It sends the file over fine but then after about 60sec of diag light blinking it stops and remains solid. I am only able to flash the buffalo pro firmware fine.

So you have upgraded to DD-WRT?

And what happens after you have tried the following?

Code: Select all

cd /tmp
wget http://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloads/images/ar71xx/gargoyle_1.5.2-ar71xx-wzr-hp-g300nh-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
mtd -e linux -r write ./gargoyle_1.5.2-ar71xx-wzr-hp-g300nh-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin linux

And just to make sure... this is not wzr-hp-g300nh V2 is it?

It will do the erase then [e]&[w] procedure then disconnect. Once it is done the diag light will remain solid.

I have been reading about getting into uboot but not sure where to go after checking that the region is not japan and 'setenv accept_open_rt_fmt 1' is not necessary.

EDIT: Can't see that it is a v2. Doesn't show it on the back or in the sys info of ddwrt.

Strange. And this is hardware version 1... as hardware version 2 is not supported by Gargoyle/OpenWRT.

I hope that someone will be able to help you.

The newer hardware appears to have the rtl8366rb Ethernet switch while older hardware had the rtl8366s switch.
Thats from the OpenWRT wiki for the WZR-HP-G300NH - you have a V2

I have the older V1 hardware, upgraded from 1.5.0 - upgraded fine
No issues - running 1.5.2 solid so far, quite stable and fast too.

I don't know if 10.03.1 should work, because I'm not sure what that
version is compared to the trunk versions.

And how long are you waiting for the firmware upgrade?

To give you an idea... when I upgraded from 1.5.0 to 1.5.2
via the web GUI, I had to leave the router alone for 10-15 minutes.

Set it to upgrade, then walk away, come back and check in 15 mins.

I missed that note in the wiki but knew about the issue. I looked around and it looks like the Backfire release doesn't have support for the rtl8366 switch. It looks like it is only in the OpenWRT Attitude Adjustment releases.

Left the upgrade running for around 30 minutes anyway but just hangs with the solid diag.

If I have the RTL8366RB chipset and it has been noted as a V2 do I need to grab the G300NH2 firmware for it? It doesn't say "WZR-HP-G300NH2" on the label.

EDIT: To answer my own question for any future users the WZR-HP-G300NH2 uses its own specific firmware for 'NH2'. The WZR-HP-G300NH has 2 different chipsets with the RTL8366RB being the revised version of the G300NH. It is more of a v1a rather than getting confused with calling it a v2.
