Is Gargoyle Dead?

Hi all,

Long time Gargoyle user. I see that OpenWRT has been on 24.10 for a while but the last version of Gargoyle was based on 22. I understand that Eric/Lantis are very busy and this is a free project, however, I'm just wondering if development is still continuing or if Gargoyle is dead?

The last official release is somewhat dated, but Lantis' current build is a lot newer and based on 23.05. So not dead (yet).

Even if that one is called beta, I've got it running in my main router without any trouble.

I’m actively working on steps necessary to move to 24.10 as well. There’s just a big rewrite of a lot of stuff that needs to happen.

You have to keep an eye on the show and tell forum for the “beta” releases.
I can’t do a release on my own. I have no authority and own none of the infrastructure.
There are frequent changes I’m doing. You just need to look beyond the home page :)
Also don’t be afraid of the word “beta”. I run these builds in my own home and would be crucified if they weren’t at least mostly stable. I will be transparent if I release something that is truly on the edge.

Things on my hit list for 2025:
- Switch the firewall to nftables
- Support more than 2 wifi radios on a device
- 6ghz support
- OpenWrt 24.10

In that order.
You can track the nftables work here: https://github.com/ericpaulbishop/gargoyle/pull/1014

Don’t underestimate the amount of effort required for all of this, particularly the nftables part. I’ve had the documentation for nftables open on my phone for over 12 months slowly reading bits and pieces. I’ve now converted 2 of the 4 custom kernel modules so I finally feel like I understand it. I’ve left the two hardest ones to last however :) if I can knock over webmon then bandwidth will be fine.

I appreciate all the work. I remember the work I did way back to help out with a newer router. I wish I had the time to help but I'm full-time busy.
I'm fine to wait but I'm hoping to see Gargoyle on the BPi-R3.

Why wait? It’s been available for ages.
