I'm wondering if it's possible to backup and restore the configuration file across very different routers? (e.g. between a Linksys WRT54GL and an ASUS WL-500G.)

It should work between those two routers since they both have broadcom chips. I don't think it would work if you were trying to restore a broadcom router's data to an atheros router, or the data from an atheros rotuer to a broadcom router.
