Solution is in 4th post

Please help, Im connecting to my WZR-HP-G300NH via RJ45 cable but getting "unidentified network" in windows 7 network sharing center

This problem started shortly after installing "gargoyle_1.3.16-ar71xx-wzr-hp-g300nh-squashfs-sysupgrade" from openwrt web interface.

I initially had trouble logging in, but used putty telnet to reset the password.

I then loged into gargoyle, and proceded to turn on the wireless and configure password and encryption. I then clicked save, but once the save finished i could no longer connect to network, getting "unidentified network" as stated above.

Really worried I have bricked router some how. power light is solid, router light becomes solid after cycle, and the connected lan port led is only on for the connected port (which blinks at times).

Been tring to fix last few days and need help!

What i have tried so far:

cycled router (multiple times) when cycling;
  • power light comes on
then all the bellow lights flash for a second
then red gear light stays on for a bit
then router light starts flashing (red gear light is off)
    then router light turns solid.
hard reset 30/30/30 (multiple times)
tried all 4 lan ports
auto ip and static ip of 192.168.1.10 gateway 192.168.1.1
differnt computer via rj45
different network cable
haved tried turning movie engine on and off
have moved router switch between "on" "off" and "auto"

If i cycle the router while pinging continously i do get a ttl see bellow

C:\Windows\System32>ping 192.168.1.1 -t

ok i have made some progress.

i used the openwrt fail safe recovery method and can now continuously ping the router getting a ttl of 64 (the method is to cycle the router, and continually push the top AOSS button while it boots, if your continously pinging the router, you will seee it start to ping back constantly with a ttl=64. you can then stop pushing the AOSS button)

i can telnet in too, but not ssh

but the gargoyle web page doesnt load. what do i do now?

Thanks

Solved Fixed

Well i finially recovered the router, got to say tho im pretty dissapointed with the comunity.. I was clearly trying and serching to solve this problem (making an effort) yet none tried to help. Im sure someone here knew the answer..

Anyway its all good. I will post the solution for anyone else who has this trouble.

So even though openwrt has a recovery mode that lets you telnet in, as i dont know any telnet commands and couldnt find a good guide, i ended up using good old TFTP.

I tried TFTP in windows xp, but couldnt get to work. I ened up finding a good guide on how to do it with ubuntu live cd. I used version 11.04

-----------------------------------------------
copy paste of guide bellow
------------------------------------------------
TFTP recovery in Linux
*Most of this part is from DD-WRT wiki with some tweak. TEST WORKING

Will use Ubuntu Live CD as an example but other distro should also work. The Ubuntu LiveCD can be booted from a USB flash drive too
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

#Get your router's MAC, its the 12 digit default SSID printed on the sticker at the back of the router, starting with 00. Then you'll need to break it down every two digit by inserting : between them.

#Download the latest official firmware(in case of recovery) from Buffalo's official website. Extract to get the firmware, in my case, its 1.74 and the firmware name is wzrhpg300nh-176, ~20MB.

# Do a hard reset or 30/30/30 on the router. (May not be necessary/or work)

While still connected to a working internet connection boot into Ubuntu, open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tftp-hpa

When that has finished get your MAC address ready, directly connect to unpowered buffalo router you want to fix, and enter the following in terminal.

sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.11.2
sudo ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0
sudo arp -s 192.168.11.1 00:1D:12:34:56:78
#change to the folder where you put the firmware image, if it's on desktop then it's
#"/home/ubuntu/Desktop".
cd /home/ubuntu/Desktop
tftp 192.168.11.1
*from this point, you're under tftp command prompt, the "tftp>" is the prompt tftp gives you, you just need to type the command AFTER that.
tftp> verbose
tftp> binary
tftp> trace
tftp> rexmt 1
tftp> timeout 60
tftp> put wzrhpg300nh-176

Replace the fictional MAC in red with the router's.

Also, at this point, the router is still unpowered and that's OK. Tftp will keep trying to send the firmware to the router and when it fails (because the router isn't yet on or hasn't yet brought up it's tftp interface) it will wait 1 second and retry, up to 60 times as that's how we set up the tftp client.

Now quickly plug the power cord back to the router. The router will start up and you will see some lights blinking (possibly). About 10-20 seconds in, you should notice that tftp is sending the file. instead of the retry message over and over you will see some progress scrolling down the screen and at the end it will tell you how many blocks or bytes were transferred in how many second.
After the transfer is complete, wait about 5-10 minutes the router will reboot itself. When the wireless LED is on you're good to go.
Bring the network back in Linux by typing

sudo service networking start (this didnt work for me i just booted back into windows. set my ipv4 static settings back to automatic. did an ipconfig, and logged into router 192.168.11.1

This is the source of the guide

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Now, time to try put gargoyle on again...
