I think there should be an option to retain settings on firmware upgrade like most other firmware has.. Rather than having to backup and restore each time which takes extra steps and an extra reboot.

Are there any plans to implement this? Or is there atleast a way it can be ssh?

I have not tried it recently but I have a new router coming in the mail
where I will test this out and see if it works.

You could always Telnet or SSH into your router and upgrade
via the command line using the sysupgrade command from OpenWRT.
