wifi to ethernet bridge, how does this work in Gargoyle

Hello,
I have 2 Fonera 2100. On one device, i installed Gargoyle 1.5.6. On the other device, i installed OpenWrt Backfire.
So it should be the same base.
With Gargoyle, i could realize a wifi to ethernet bridge.
I tried the same in OpenWrt, but it didnt work. So I asked in the OpenWrt-Forum. I was informed that there is no real bridge when the main router do not support WDS (which is my case).
I am a little bit confused.
How does gargoyle do this?
Thanks.
