Configuration for online gaming

Hallo - I'm new user of Gargoyle, i've read all documentation but I still don't know how to configure my router (TP-741ND) to keep low ping in computer games. In my house we use 3 computers - my wife is especially insane in using youtube and livestreaming (sick) and a friend uses Steam and services like youtuve too. So - i cannot play any fast FPP (like quake - game played for about 12 years by me) when they are using network :(
Can anyone give me a detailed instructions how to configure my router to keep nice ping for gaming? Is it possible? Classical bandtwitch limiter in stock TP-Link firmware works horrible for gaming - even if I give them 256 bytes for up and download - ping is terrible (peak few hundreds ms) and they want to kill me - "What did you do that internet is such slow". Please help.

Additional info:
Connection type - 2MB /day, 10MB/night, other computers connected via Wireless (notebooks), my PC directly connected by LAN cable

Well you picked the right software for your problem. Nobody beats Gargoyle when it comes to keeping harmony in the house of the online gamer.

Start with the default QoS setup and enable both upload and download QoS with the appropriate link speeds for your ISP and then enable the active congestion controller .

Next, make a new class for your Quake game on both upload and download QoS pages and then make a rule to direct the Quake traffic to those classes. Play your game when no one is home and insure that the traffic from the game is going to the correct class by watching the class load display while actually playing the game.

Finally, set the minimum bandwidth setting on these classes about 25% higher than what you observed that the game actually uses. You can typically leave the percent and max bandwidth on your new classes at the default.

The hardest part is the rule. The only effective way in my view is to use IP addresses or port numbers. I play XBOX so its easy for me to write the rules on the IP address of the console. Never played Quake so don't know much about it, you will have to do a little research.

Now I am not going to tell you that things will be perfect. You may notice a little variance in your ping times when the wife in grooving to youtube but you should see a dramatic improvement.

Let us know how it goes.

PS. You have this note at the end of your post
Additional info:
"Connection type - 2MB /day, 10MB/night.
What does this mean exactly? Is it upload or download speed that varies? The congestion controller has a 5 to 1 range and only works on the download side so keep that in mind.

My bandwith download speed switches between 0 a.m. and 12 a.m. to 10Mbit/s and rest of time (since midday to midnigt) stays at 2Mbit/s. I was absent several days - but still I would be very glad to have detailed instruction how to set QoS/Quota settings to be possible to use internet for other and play comfortable in online games.

Quakelive servers uses ports from range 2700-2799 and 5222 for authentification. How to make 1 rule for as many ports? Please help.

You can use the notation 2700-2799 for the port in any rule. However I you might just try using the IP address of the computer playing the game instead.

If you will set your maximum speed to 8Mbps then the active congestion controller will handle you varying bandwidth automatically.

You should do some experimentation on your own and then post your configuration and results. Hard to help you will such a non-specific request for help.

GameConfig, well it seemed to be that me and my friends were always hunting for TCP/UDP game port numbers before we could start a game (We had reset a router, reinstalled a game, was at a LAN party, etc, etc). There didnt seem to be one place to go for this game configuration info, that was:- up to date and indepth, hence this site. Currently the TCP/UDP ports given within each game details are the max needed, you may get your game running with less open. E.g you're not running a server.I used to get constant disconnection until Justin told me to go as low as I could. You will find the standard channel for most routers are the same causing interference when most of your neighbors are using the same frequency.
