Disk keeps coming back up as NTFS after reformat

Hi,
I bought a new 8TB hard drive which was shipped as NTFS wanting to use it as Gargoyle-attached storage. It's a little slow as NTFS so I thought I'd try it as ext4, but every time Gargoyle think it's successfully formatted the disk, it comes back up as NTFS again.
Can I try reformatting from ssh instead? I'm not sure what subset of Linux commands the router has available to it, and I don't have another device handy which I trust to write an ext4 partition right now.
