The remote AP is a TP-Link WR702N running stock firmware. Main page see screenshot:

Sorry I must be misinterpreting your post then.
You’ve got:
Main Router
Bridged Router
Remote AP

And you’ve listed a wifi bridge between the last 2, so I assumed the remote AP was using Gargoyle in bridge mode.
What have I misunderstood?

It's in reverse from the diagram on the wiki page:
https://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/do ... e_repeater

The middle one is running Gargoyle in bridge mode.
In my setup, the main router is located to the right.

192.168.0.180: Main Router, Internet Gateway. In the Diagram this would be 192.168.1.30
192.168.0.174: Bridge. In the Diagram, this would be 192.168.1.35 and 192.168.10.1, but with the LAN side still pointing right.
192.168.0.173: equals 192.168.1.1, but without the WAN connection.

Right. So the expected way Gargoyle sets this up is like a “WAN” connection, which might be falling foul of what you’re trying to do. I’ve never tried doing it this way, and I’d need to do some testing to understand.
Off the top of my head, we are expecting the AP to give us an IP which it isn’t, that’s being handled further upstream in the other direction.

As the old method was a proper layer 2 bridge, I expect it did not care about your attempted configuration being unconventional (to say the least).

The old method is not super desirable due to a dependency on ebtables and it’s generally a “bit hacky”. It’s a cool trick though!
There may be another option called trelay, but I’d need to look at it in depth.

In summary, I don’t have a solution for you today sorry.

Okay, so I'm back on 1.7.x for the time being.

The reason for this reverse setup is that while the small WR702N can operate as WiFi Client, I've had issues with the stability of the connection and no means of restarting it remotely. By moving the initiator of the bridge into the main network, I have full access and also the ability to run the ping watchdog to restart the connection automatically.
