Hi,
I know this an old topic, But it's really puzzling me that OperWRT support this H/W version while my beloved Gargoyle doesn't
I've been using Gargoyle for years on those devices without any issues & through different H/W versions.
Gargoyle provide the basic function that I need from a simple access point device without the GUI headache of OpenWRT.
I'm a power user when it's come to Win's & Linux sys but a nope when it's come to OpenWRT & Gargoyle.
Is it possible to carry on & compile a build for the latest TL-WA901ND V5 even if only an older version like 1.10
Last version available for this model was 1.10 & then get dumped

.

Gargoyle no longer supports any 4MB Flash device! Also, Gargoyle has more features than OpenWrt at the base. The explanation is here:

Even OpenWrt doesn't support these devices moving forward.
There's nothing that can be done.
If you want to spinoff your own branch from the last supported version and keep it up to date, that's up to you (or whichever generous user chooses to do so), but that's a lot of work for something that can be replaced pretty cheaply.

Thx RomanHK I already check this with other stuff on OpenWrt, but my goal here to work on bringing Gargoyle to this device too as there were for older H/W versions or at least a custom build that work

Thx Lantis, I'm up to this challenge as I benefit from Gargoyle for years & to start give some thing back by working on this as this model is widely spread every were for just an AP device.
Could you advice me on topic that can help me to learn my way through this? which version I should start tamper with V1.10 or older? This will short my searching time a lot

I'm not sure it's possible, but the best starting point would be 1.12 (from a security point of view).
It is based on OpenWrt 18.06 and is still actively receiving security patches. You may be able to trim this version small enough to work, but it would be difficult.
Otherwise, starting from 1.10, but it has several well known security vulnerabilities which have never been patched upstream. It would be significant effort to backport these patches.
If it was never an internet facing device, maybe this is ok? There is still WPA2 vulnerabilities though.
Starting with the developer documentation in the wiki and on GitHub are good places to begin, but they really only scratch the surface of what you can do and what needs to be done to achieve what you're asking.
