First I am not talking of using through a vpn connection.
When working from home, I have to use a vpn connection to my office. When that vpn connection is active, the HDHomeRunView app cannot find the device.

My HDHomeRun prime has a fixed ip assigned by my router, is there a way to tell the app to use this exact ip address ?

If you are saying that the app is running on the machine which is using the VPN for work, and the device you are trying to communicate with is not on the VPN, then no. It is not going to work.

That's the whole point of what your work is trying to achieve.
