RESOLVED: Network slowdown with 1.10.0

TP-Link TL-WDR4300 v1, running version 1.10.0 with extroot.
Upgraded using factory image w/o preserving settings.
Same router was running on 1.9.1 before.
On more than two occasions the router stopped responding: I tried browsing the router config page but it timed out. On some occasions it just hanged for a couple of seconds: ssh was frozen for example.
I tracked it down the problem to be with the signal strength: the slowdown were only happening when I was far from the router. I have not measured the power on the place I was - only had an iPad and the signal strength was 2 out of 3 - but where I was I never had any kinda of these problems.
What I noticed is that the 1.10.0 defaulted to channel 11 with a max transmit power of 19 dBm. When I changed to channel 3, the max transmit power went up to 22 dBm, and the connection was much better.
After the channel change, I measured the signal strength on a Gargoyle 1.10.1 client bridge (TL-MR3420) and it was around 67%. Before it was around 75%. I will run some signal strength tests later today with different channels, but my question is:
Does the channel assignment impacts the max transmit power?
Does 1.10 handles the channel/signal/transmit power differently from 1.9?
