It is supported in at least the latest version. Devices should automount in most cases

there is a USB-plugin , but is "red" , complaining about insufficient memory , needs another 5.4 MB
Really, 5.4 MB ?
The "factory" file is about 4 MB, sysupgrade is 3.5 MB, and to add USB support they needs to be more than doubled ?
Went back to older versions, v1.4.7 was about 5 MB, and USB support was INCLUDED in the menu and it was working.
Too bad that wireless setting can not be saved from a webgui.
Next versions of 1.5.x had no included USB menu , neither any USB plugin.
Then in v1.6.x the USB plugin showed up, but with same complaint of missing 5.4 Mb memory.
Read older posts about DIR-825 + USB problems, and it seems like this issue is going on for many years.
Would be nice to get it finally fixed, 8 Mb memory is enough to make USB work.

And what about 1.9.x?
You haven't mentioned which version you tested for "latest".

v1.9.x is the same situation as any earlier versions starting with v1.6.x

there is a USB-plugin , but is "red" , complaining about insufficient memory , needs another 5.4 MB !

Some posts have mentioned a TL-WR1043 v1,2,3
It has also 8 Mb memory+USB, and the USB is working .
However, the Gargoyle file is 7.8 MB, so I assume that USB support is compiled into the menu (not a plugin)

The same could be done for this popular , and well supported by OpenWrt, DIR-825 B1 router.

Please post the banner file that is generated at the command line on the 1.9.x version you are using. I need to know what exact commit you are on because I know this was already "fixed" a long time ago.

The screen that says Gargoyle in ASCII art is enough.
Or you can get the contents of /etc/banner I believe.

You don't need to keep trying to sell the issue to me. I'm happy to help and investigate. Just give me data.

This problem was also reported in this post:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8883&p=39183&hilit= ... usb#p39183

However, I could not find any indication after that it worked.

I already moved back to OpenWrt, but I should be able to reflash again with Gargoyle 1.9.x, and provide all the info needed to help you solve this problem.

I do not understand what "banner" are you referring?
Is it what shows in the USB plugin box?

Try to re-install Gargoyle tonight and post /etc/banner

Login to the command line using these instructions
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8505

Once you have successfully logged in you'll get a big "banner" which says Gargoyle and some information about the versioning underneath. Just copy paste all of that to me

Have Barrier Breaker 14.07 installed, what is the best approach to load Gargoyle?

Do it from Luci web gui ?
Which file: squashfs-factory? squashfs-sysupgrade ?

Do it from CLI with sysupgrade?"
Which file: squashfs-factory? squashfs-sysupgrade ?

Do it from Recovery Webflash?
Which file: squashfs-factory? squashfs-sysupgrade ?

Go back to D-Link factory and start from there ?

I will provide all the info you need, hopefully this problem will be solved at the end.
