Restriction settings not working/flaky results

First of all thanks to all the people who have put so much effort into making this project happen, it has so much potential.
Having said that, it's been a very frustrating experience so far. I am a newbie to Gargoyle but I have an IT background (which I guess most people here have) so all this is not new to me. I researched a router that was proven to work and bought a TP-Link TL-WR841N/ND v10. I am running Gargoyle v1.9.1
Since installing I have tried a lot of Googling but have not found a solution to my issues. For now, though, the main problem I have is that the one reason I went down the Gargoyle route doesn't work - restrictions. I have set up simple restrictions for my own device to be able to test the system. I have blocked all networks access all day for a device by MAC address. This didn't work. I then flushed the router again and found that the restriction was working. I then tried to assign a static IP to my device which didn't work and also broke the restrictions on my device. I flushed the router again and once again the simple restrictions worked. I didn't touch anything more and added a second device. The new restrictions didn't work and also the old ones stopped working. I went through this twice with the same disappointing result. This is where I stopped and registered (after much frustration) with this forum, having spent most of a day with this.
Can someone enlighten me why I might have these issues? Is the web interface flaky and do I need to use the command line instead? And if so, where can I find some documentation for that?
