it looks to be a problem with lack of space yet again. With 128MB of flash in this one I'm struggling to get my head around this.
According to the OpenWRT R6220 device page, 91MB of the available flash is either unused or reserved, probably to be compatible with easy reversion to OEM firmware.

See the Software mods section of that page about possibly being able to use the 60MB reserved partition. I expect that you would have to compile your own firmware as the required kmod-mtd-rw package is not built in any normal Gargoyle build and it's highly unlikely you can use any OpenWRT kmod package (you might get lucky with the 24.10.4 OpenWrt package on the 24.10.4 based build from Lantis but the odds are against you as Linux kernel builds are very finicky about everything matching).

 Pythonic, I might have known it would not be that simple! Thanks for tracking down that info for me. I don't really have the confidence that I will be able to implement those software changes described on that page as I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to Linux. There is a hardware mod described there though which is to add a mPCIe socket to the board. I might try going down that route.

I’ve been researching similar projects in parallel—Netmaker, Tailscale, NetBird, and others. The issue is that the current routers simply aren’t powerful enough. Newer, more capable routers may handle it, but the older Archer C7 units are no longer sufficient.
