I have VoIP. I can probably turn QoS off and see how it goes but sometimes it can turn out that voice can get choppy with other activity.

I am surprised at the hit though even when there is NO VoIP activity. Just turning QoS on causes the degradation of the performance.

As long as it does not crash, like the 1043nd did, then I'm happy.

Is it the acc? What's acc?

The active control, as opposed to just using qos without it. At those speeds I wouldn't think acc would be required unless your line was not staying at a static speed

The speed of your WAN has no bearing on your need from QoS. All people who use QoS should also benefit from ACC.

That makes sense, although it then brings back the original problem if the current routers can't handle the requirements of QOS to manage the link. I quite liked the idea of using a small pc to handle the routing - just not sure how easy or feasible that would be to set up.

My parents are looking for a router on a fast connection, i'm quite keen to get qos on their link. How much performance hit are you getting and is the qos still holding up. If its a case you lose x speed but qos remains fine it will probably be ok - just interested what they should expect

I was looking on the openwrt forums and the assus rtn56u seemed to get mentioned but I then couldn't find it in the supported list and then whether it would be any good for gargoyle - more research by me required on that one.

Sorry tals, didn't see your message. I get about a 45% hit. With QoS turned off speedtest.net runs at 98MBits during quiet times on my cable service from Optus. As soon as I turn QoS Upload and Download on, it drops to 55MBits.

However, with all the VoIP calls I make there is no stutter and the voice is crystal clear, so it's doing it's job.

On another note, the 3700v2 has been rock solid and wireless performance is great. Gargoyle + 3700v2 is AWESOME!

That's useful to know and particularly that despite the performance hit you still have clear calls which is the main aspect imho.

There are also no dropouts while running Wireless N. So I suspect the 1043nd had either hardware problems or just wasn't up to the task.

Hey bud, I've realised you are running 1.4.7. You should have installed either 1.5.3 (this build is super good) or 1.5.4. However someone can correct me on the latter because I read somewhere that 1.5.4 has better QoS handling (something thing about a pro ass 'minrtt' thing?).
