I guess that you have not upgraded all that way through 1.5.3, that is very stable and you should be very happy with that version. it should be very stable for all users, even though it is still an experimental version.

One more thing I have noticed is that make sure the router you are repeating or Client+AP is set to 20 mhz not 40 or 20/40 mhz channel width otherwise you will get poor wifi performance. This is because gargoyle cannot seem to limit the width to 20 and connects at 40 mhz which leaves no room for repetition.
