I've been swamped at work so just now getting back to this.

I have two questions:

1) I seem to have totally scrogged my gargoyle router. I can't connect to it in any way. How do I reset it? I've tried the reset button (no luck), ssh into it with Cmder while it was connected via ethernet (no luck), wireless (no luck). I seem to have totally messed it up (whoops). How do I do a reset?

2) The last comment here suggests that even if I follow the instructions earlier, it won't monitor an airport and a FIOS router. Suggestions on how to do that?

Happy to take suggestions on either one!

Thanks!
greg

Gargoyle must act as the sole gateway to your network if you want it to accurate monitor traffic

why do you have both the fios and airport. Is it to give better WiFi coverage or is there a reason you keep different clients on different subnets?

Reset Gargoyle to default:

Make sure you use SSH not Telnet if you’re on 1.10 or later.
When you get into failsafe mode, what you wrote to @Lantis, run the command via PuTTY (it depends on the router type):

Code: Select all

mtd -r erase rootfs_data
PuTTY: https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgt ... atest.html

Thank you all so much for helping! I have learned a lot and am still learning, so thank you.

So I reset the gargoyle router (again). I changed to dhcp access point. I changed the ip address to 192.168.10.1. I then hooked up the FIOS LAN to the gargoyle WAN port. And it worked, mostly. The wireless name is OpenWrt (which I will change eventually).

I do have a few thoughts/questions:

* I can connect to OpenWrt wirelessly (the gargoyle router). Using the OpenWrt connection I can get to the rest of the web. Success!

* Recently visited sites. While connected to OpenWrt, I have gone to multiple different websites (google, youtube, other locations). None of them seem to show up on the "Recently visited sites" (Status:WebUsage:RecentlyVisitedSites). Instead I get very few and they are things like:
captive.apple.com
ical.mac.com

How/why are so few visited sites showing up here?

* Recent Web Searches does not show anything at all. Maybe I don't understand what this is? I thought maybe it was going to show what searches from google occurred, but absolutely nothing shows up here.

* Just to be clear: I can monitor usage, but only when people connect to the gargoyle router. So if they connect to the FIOS router, that traffic becomes un-monitor-able (if that is a word ;-). I can change the FIOS router password and force everyone to use the gargoyle router, but if there was a way to monitor usage on both, that would be great.

Thanks so much for all the help!

Sorry if i missed it and you mentioned it previously, but which version are you running?

If you are running anything below 1.11.0, then the low reported "websites visited" is expected due to encrypted web traffic.
Newer versions can see some of this but not everything, and they are not able to deduce your search terms in search engines at all.
The websites that are showing up are likely to be HTTP (not HTTPS) only.

I am using the gargoyle router from this site, but I just figured out it has 1.10.

I'll figure out how to update it to 1.11.

Thanks!

OK, I am going to upgrade my router to 1.11.0. So I went to the download page (https://www.gargoyle-router.com/download.php).

I assume I want a firmware image, but I am unsure which architecture to use? I am using a gargoyle router (v2, https://shop.gargoyle-router.com/produc ... -router-v2) bought from this site a few weeks ago.

The information on the gargoyle router says it has a Atheros AR9331 chipset but the only ones that look close on the download page are:
Atheros AR71XX and Atheros 231X/5312.

Oou ... So sorry, but probably not support newer version, I found only v1.10.0 ( https://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloa ... pgrade.bin )

I apologize once again for my mistake  .
