Go through the device definitions in the OpenWrt target directory and make sure that all default and device packages have been included in the config with =y. In particular, default packages sometimes don't seem to get included in images unless they're set =y in the config.

Well, it's just not going to work properly and OpenWRT is no different so it's not a Gargoyle issue. Dmesg shows brcmfmac-firmware-43602a1-pcie errors and the switch only does 100Mb/s. Even though gargoyle only gives G as an option I'm connected at 144Mb/s, same with OpenWRT although it says N.

I wanted to get rid of the MR3420 because of the MT76xx heavy load crashes which apart from the AP disappearing, it screws up the bandwidth monitor and quotas.

My internet is 4G so I have an MR6400v3 (not supported by OpenWRT) set up as a modem going into the MR3420 with Gargoyle. Because of the crashes I've had to disable wireless on the MR3420 and I've added an Asus RT-AC1200G as an AP (also not supported by OpenWRT). It's messy but it works, and the speeds to my media server are a lot faster with the Asus AP.

I don't see the point of swapping the Netgear for the Asus so it's going to get flashed back to stock firmware and sit in a box as a spare AP.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help. I've learnt a lot so I guess it wasn't a complete waste of time.

Cheers

That's disappointing :(

Out of curiousity, which OpenWrt versions did you try that showed the same problems?

The most recent one: openwrt-22.03.5-bcm53xx-generic-netgear_r8000-squashfs.chk

Broadcom just is what it is unfortunately. I agree you did not waste your time in learning something :)

If you haven't already put it back to the OEM firmware, you might consider trying the 23.05 snapshot (i.e. pre-release of 23.05, should include LuCI unlike master snapshots) from https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/ ... x/generic/ to see whether that works any better than 22.03.5.

I have put it back to stock firmware but I can flash back and forth from either GUI without any issues so I will give it a try.

Cheers

Snapshot is even worse, I keep getting "can't connect to network" and if I can manage to get connected to 2.4GHz N it doesn't give me an IP address.

I then flashed current OpenWRT and wireless was working better but same issues as previous post.

Here is dmesg from current which is basically the same as my Gargoyle builds. I'm sure you can make more sense of it than me. Sorry for the length, apparently attachments don't work.

Re: Netgear R8000

I'd seen some bcm53xx activity in OpenWrt master before the 23.05 branch so thought there may have been some hope of improvement - clearly not :(

Re: Netgear R8000

As Lantis said, it is what it is. If I could get wireless working at 2.4GHz/dual channel 40MHz/300Mb/s and the switch at Gigabit I would be happy enough. I don't think that will happen though, and will keep using the MR3420.

Thanks anyway.
