Bandwidth Monitoring Table - Public IP Addresses Showing Usage

Post by catdieselpwr »

New to gargoyle but liking it so far. Linksys WRT1200ACS running latest 1.11.0 version setup as an access point and assigning DHCP for a set range and static IP for everything that I expect to be connected. We have a rural internet that has a 50 GB cap on it and for months we managed, but recently with seemingly no changes to our typical usage started going over. Enter gargoyle to figure out where our usage is coming from. When I look at my bandwidth data table, I'm confused about 2 things

1) Gargoyle is always the highest user of data
2) I have every public IP address shown as a host in the usage table (page after page of them)

Any help to pinpoint what is going on? Tried to attach files but got an error message saying board quota for attachments has been reached. Looking through the forum for the last couple days I haven't found anything similar...

you need to remote host images

e.g. https://imgur.com/

I use greenshot to take screen shots

Can we also understand how your devices are connected to the internet?
Understanding what cables are plugged where would assist, and what connection settings you have chosen within Gargoyle.

Thanks for the help.

I have a US Cellular Rural Internet Hotspot/Modem/Router combo unit with DHCP disabled. From the LAN port on that to a LAN port on my Gargoyle router (tried to the gargoyle WAN port with WAN bridged to LAN and didn't see a difference) with a static LAN IP. Gargoyle router configured with WAN as an access point. Gargoyle is doing DHCP, and also assigning static IP for all my regular devices outside the DHCP range to make my usage stats a littler easier to interpret. I have an ethernet network hard drive connected via LAN to the gargoyle router as well. NO QoS setup at all.

The bandwidth monitor isn't designed to work in a LAN to LAN configuration lime you've described. Gargoyle must be in gateway mode to get any benefit from the features it provides.

You currently have it in what we would call "dumb switch/AP" mode.

So showing external address usage is probably par for the course in these circumstances.

Thanks. That makes sense. Would love some education on which part of my setup needs to change to get gargoyle working correctly?

Connect via would need to change to (likely) DHCP Wired. From the LAN on your upstream device you would plug into WAN on Gargoyle.

This will create a new subnet, so make sure the LAN of upstream and downstream are different.
