Did you do a fresh flash or keep your settings from 1.6.2?
Nothing changed in relation to PPPoE in regards to gargoyle between those versions.

Strange I have PPPoE (Wired) working without a hitch on
TL-WDR3600 : Gargoyle 1.8.0 : NBN FixedWireless

A simple issue maybe? bad cable? Connection between Modem LAN port and Gargoyle WAN port? username/password type?
Can you help someone else get Gargoyle up and running?
TL-WDR3600 : Gargoyle 1.9.0 : NBN FixedWireless
TL-WR1043ND-V2 : Gargoyle 1.8.0 : 3G Huawei E160E

Testing PPPoE (Wired) on 1.8 also works just fine here.
