limited to 250mbit download with gargoyle branded router

Post by gnarbarian »

Originally posted in hardware until I realized it would be better here.

Just purchased the TP-Link WR1043ND v2.1 with the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9558 chipset from the store here:

http://www.gargoyle-router.com/shop/pro ... router-1-1

Great value on a five port gigabit router and I love the traffic control features. I had openwrt on my last router and purchased this one to take advantage of having gigabit speeds on all ports.

I have a gigabit internet connection here at my house, going directly from my PC to the cable modem I can get about 850mbit download speeds but when going through the gargoyle I can only get around 250mbit.

I've tried switching out the ethernet cable between the modem and the gargoyle but it didn't seem to have an effect.

It's currently running firmware version 1.6.2

I then looked to see if I could upgrade the firmware to 1.8 but the architectures listed for download don't include the Atheros QCA9558.

would the Atheros AR71XX or Atheros 231X/5312 images work?

Thanks in advance for the help!

The bandwidth monitoring functionality of Gargoyle does result in a speed drop.
Upgrading to 1.8.0 will not help (may even make it worse).
1.9.X will be the next release that has speed improvements (probably) but it won't exceed what you are already seeing.

Thanks for the info! bummer that those features are mutually exclusive. I have them disabled and the speed remains slow.

I am going to try this openwrt firmware: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/tp-l ... r1043nd_v2

in my situation, finely grained monitoring is secondary to being able to see the total throughput and get my full uplink speed.

Somewhat bummed the description of the "gigabit router" doesn't say anything about not being able to use it at one gigabit. But if openwrt works then I'll be just as happy.

Thanks again for the quick response

gigabit is the speed it can negotiate at.
the CPU inside the router still has to do the legwork to try and make 1gigabit of traffic go through it. NAT throughput is the important measure but it is a less impressive figure to put on the outside of the box ;)

some routers achieve this through the use of a hardware NAT processor, but these processors are not supported by openwrt.

OpenWRT upped the download to about 350mbit but nowhere close to a gigabit.

bummer.

Might need to look into a router with dual core 1GHZ+ processor

The router CPU has to process all internal functions plus bandwidth

With the speed you have, you may need one of the newest
top-of-the-line routers to take advantage of your download bandwidth

Not recommending that specific router - just something
close to the specs on that one.

It'd likely work at those speeds as a Wireless -> LAN bridge, but as the others have mentiond because it's passing through NAT, that's where the slowdown occurs.
